This has been blamed on a number of factors including climate change and the widespread use of impervious building materials such as asphalt and paving in urban areas.
The most obvious visual effect of flooding is the physical damage that it causes to buildings and infrastructure. Secondary effects caused by the flooding of buildings can include the spread of water-bourne diseases and financial hardship (e.g. temporary loss of revenue to affected businesses). Furthermore, the emotional effect on those affected by floods should not be understated.
